More info

Digestive enzymes are synthesized by the digestive system. Digestive enzymes enable breaking down complex molecules into simple molecules, that the body can absorb. They are produced in saliva, the stomach and pancreas.

Each enzyme acts on a specific substrate, so three types have been identified:

  • Proteolytic enzymes that act on proteins.

  • Glucolytic enzymes that act on carbohydrates.

  • Lipolytic enzymes that act on lipids.

Normally digestive enzymes have a name ending in "ASE”, depending on the molecule that they transform. For example, proteases digest proteins, lipases digest lipids and amylases digest starch.

CHARACTERISTICS

Definition of enzymes present in Ortho Multizym

A protease is an enzyme that cuts the peptidic links of proteins. They are also called: a peptidase or proteolytic enzyme.

An amylase is an enzyme in the hydrolases family, mainly catalyzing starch hydrolysis into reducing sugars.

A glucoamylase is an enzyme that decomposes sugar chains such as maltose until the simplest sugar, glucose, is obtained.

An invertase is an enzyme that hydrolizes saccharose into glucose and fructose. It is found in the cells of brewer’s yeast. It is also called saccharase or sucrase.

A lipase is a hydrosoluble enzyme capable of carrying out hydrolysis of ester function and is specialized in transforming triglyceride (lipid) into glycerol and fatty acids (lipolysis).
